Plastic surgery options let mothers get new looks

Shannon Bolick says her life hasn't drastically changed since having plastic surgery last year, but there have been changes.

There's a level of happiness in her day-to-day life that was missing before her "Mommy Makeover" or what some call a "Mommy Job."

"I still go to work and spend time with my kids, but I feel better about myself and look better in my clothes," said Bolick, who had breast augmentation and some laser surgery.

Dr. Len Overstreet of Blue Ridge Plastic Surgery in Hendersonville, N.C., said women like Bolick have been getting plastic surgery for years, but reality television has given the procedures new names and a new level of exposure.

"There's no shame in wanting to look good anymore," Overstreet said. "It used to be that vanity was a bad thing, and I'm not sure it is."

The phrases "Mommy Makeover" and "Mommy Job" are used to describe moms having at least two plastic surgery procedures, said Dr. Michael Orseck of Magnolia Plastic Surgery in Spartanburg. It's usually done to help a mom's body look like it did before childbirth. Orseck said the most common procedures are breast augmentations and tummy tucks.

"The two operations really complement each other," Orseck said. "They're happy with their whole torso now. It doesn't do much good to do a breast augmentation and their tummy is a little out of shape."

Bolick, one of Orseck's patients, said one of the best compliments she's received is from friends who didn't realize she had the procedure.

"Mothers don't really want to look big like the movie stars, but like they did before they got pregnant," Bolick said.
